Great to hear that you got it working. Maybe there's hope for me after I
upgrade my machine.

On a side note; I just installed the free Avast! (http://www.avast.com)
on my laptop running Windows 7 x64. It works great.

Thanks for this info. How did you happen to come by Windows 7?

It's Windows 7 beta build 7000. It'll run until Aug. 3 or something like that. I got it from Microsoft in Feb.

Getting antivirus support for XP64 has been difficult because XP64
didn't catch on enough before Vista came along, so the vendors
don't want to bother with it. ArcSoft TotalMedia Extreme,
necessary for my Hauppague 1212 HD PVR, doesn't have 64 bit
support, so I have to maintain 32bit and 64bit machines

I tried XP64 a couple of years ago and had to give up on it because of lack of support and there wasn't really any 64 bit apps for it. Even now, Firefox 64 works OK but there is no 64 bit Flash so what's the good? Java 64 seemed to work a little, but a lot of web sites couldn't "find" it so those web sites didn't load.

Now on Win7 x64 the only truly 64 bit apps I'm using are Shredder (Thunderbird64) and Avast! The rest are regular old 32 bit programs.

Unfortunately, I could only get a complimentary academic copy
of Vista32, not Vista64, so for 64 bit I have to use XP.

How is Win7 for those who weren't crazy about Vista? I threw my
Vista in the bit bucket. The last straw (of many) was that I
couldn't setup multiple file associations with Vista like I could
with every other windows. For example, I might want choose to
open an MP3 with WMP, WinAmp, CoolEdit 2000, CoolEdit PRO, etc.
by right-clicking. Vista refused to let me do this.

Win7 runs better on less. What I mean is, my laptop is an Aspire 5000 (3.5 years old) and I could run Win7 permanently without hesitation. A friend has a dual core Intel Dell laptop with Vista32 that is slow responding and a little flaky with some things.

The networking part is very similar to Vista though, I'm still not sure if that is a good or bad thing; and I really like the Win7 UI.

BTW, my machine is chewing through these CUDA units in about
2:15 - 2:30. The main impediment seems to be getting the server
to make enough of them to keep up. The "Passively cooled" $40
Gigabyte GeForce 8400 GS seems to be dissipating heat adequately
through its "vertical radiator". I wonder how Astropulse units will
slog along when they become CUDA-capable?

The 8400 "only" has eight "engines" or "pipelines" or whatever. 512 MB seems
to be enough, though. I guess 16 pipelines would be faster. I don't know
how the 8400 works with 3D games, I've never bought or played one. The
"show graphics" button is grayed out for the CUDA Seti units, so I don't
know how fast the graphics move.

I haven't tried running CPU and GPU units at the same time because I can't
download a backlog of GPU units, and it seems like if Boinc it has CPU
units, it won't DL any GPU units (or something like that).

I'm going to have to get a new motherboard, RAM, power supply, processor, and video card. The motherboard I'm looking at has a geforce 8200 on board so I might try that for a while, but I imagine I'll be getting something better.
