Unfortunately I have zero experience with the config files. Sorry if 
this is too elementary, but are you sure you saved the 'screwy' one as 
plain text, with no word-processor code or markup? Assuming your BOINC 
is a recent version, did you make sure the file's owner, group, & access 
permissions (or Windows equivalents) are compatible with the "sandbox"?
