The server status page is all green and there are no other indications there is a problem. Boinc
says "downloading" but nothing downloads. in the messages it says "HTTP Error". In the transfer
page, it sometimes says "project backoff". I don't remember seeing that before. I recently updated
Boinc. Someone suggested my version of Boinc, 6.10.18 is no good. Does anyone know anything about
this?
Thanks.

Possible DNS issue. Yes, the project backoff message is new, but the
function isn't. Running 6.10.18 on one of my machines without issues.
I'd suggest flushing your DNS cache if you know how, including your DSL
modem. If you don't know how, just power down the machine, power cycle the
DSL box and then power on the machine. If this doesn't clear it up, go
onto the forum boards and post in the Panic Mode On thread in the Number
Crunchers forum. Lots of experts there. Include a short excerpt of the
messages you are getting.
Thanks. I'm on HughesNet, but I'll try rebooting the HN7000s satellite modem, which has a built-in
router. I'm having the same problem on multiple computers with different versions of Boinc and
different OS'es, so that rules out a lot. Intra-computer communication seems to be working fine, as
does Internet access, but web pages often have to be loaded twice, as is often the case with my
HughesNet system. On the WU's that say "Downloading", if I hit "retry" about 50 times, especially at
2 or 3 AM, it will finally download. This problem started some time last week.
Yes it does rule out a lot. It kind of rules in some sort of DNS issue
with your connection or enough noise on the connection that you are
dropping packets like mad. (Your dish didn't get bumped did it?)
First check (ping) that you aren't dropping packets. If you are, get that
fixed by your ISP.
If you aren't dropping packets you might try another DNS. Don't know squat
about your setup, but if you do you might try pointing your DNS entries at
another DNS.

Of course write all the settings down before you change them so you can
restore them if it doesn't work.
I just downloaded about 800 MB of updates after reinstalling one of my Windows XP's, all without a
problem. I don't know about changing my DNS. Would that be in the modem? I don't seem to have any
problems connecting to anything else. I did notice that the "Result turnaround time" on the server
status page is climbing and up to a suspicious 139.43 hours. Usually anything over 60 and climbing
means there is a problem, but the servers are all green. Wouldn't the monitor software change the
color if there was a problem? I also tried dial-up with a different computer and a different ISP and
I am still getting the same problem. Wouldn't that rule out the DNS issue? I don't see anything on
the "message boards" about a problem, either.
You say you aren't having problems with other sites, but say you have to
load them twice? That IS A PROBLEM!
As to the dial up, depends on what DNS server the computer is set to use.
Unless it was different because you used dial up, then noting changed.
(Just because the connection is dial up doesn't mean the DNS server changed.)
