I went for a canvass of the area several weeks later. First I spoke to the husband at the home reported to have the party (316 Campville). He informed me that the party was likely one of his wife's family reunions, which occur in July after the fourth. His wife was not present at the time, so I left my number, hoping to hear from her about an exact date. He stated that he did not believe anything unusual had been seen - he was sure that he would have heard about it.
I then visited the area of the "pond", which is part of a junkyard / construction equipment storage area. No one was present at the time of my visit, except for a small dog, which barked madly but was harmless. At any rate, the pond did exist. Theoretically, since the construction depot was at the top of a hill, someone there might have observed something, however, it is unlikely it was occupied on a weekend day.
I then visited the isolated house that was located almost exactly at the sighting area. The residents were a former CAP (Civil Air Patrol) member, his naturalized wife and their baby. They had observed nothing unusual at any time. The husband stated that military aircraft and National Guard aircraft did occasionally fly over, always at altitude, perhaps once a month. An ultralight had once flown over the house a few years ago.
On their recommendation, I drove back to the pond and followed Wildcat Hill Road up. However, it quickly became clear to me that it was impossible to be sure of the possible flight line without studying a topo map, and that canvassing up here could be a major project. The only item of interest obtained from the drive was determining that a power substation existed just off Wildcat Hill, and was the destination of the powerlines near the pond, and another set of powerlines just past the turnoff toward Route 8.
I then canvassed the rest of the street:
I reached the wife of the house at 316. She confirmed that her family gathering in 1995 was Saturday, July 15. These have mostly been held on the second weekend of the month, so if the year were 1994, the date would probably be the 9th or the 16th. If 1996, the 13th.
She stated that she had not heard of anyone seeing anything, but that they are usually talking among themselves and might not.
I left my number and asked her to call if any additional information was obtained.
