| Report Summary |
"a cone shaped UFO hovering about 200' over some cypress trees... moved
rapidly and changed positions... the cone-shaped object appeared to be about
25' high and had four tiers of windows emitting a yellowish glow... a noise
like a diesel generator... within 200 yards of the UFO, Flynn jumped out
of the swamp buggy... the UFO emitted a jet-like noise and a blast of wind
that knocked him off balance; as he continued to approach within a few yards,
the UFO emitted a beam like a welder's torch and Flynn blacked out... Extensive
physical trace evidence was found, including an area of burnt sawgrass 72
feet in diameter"[footnote 1]
"On March 12, 1965 Flynn took his swamp buggy and four dogs and headed for
an isolated area eighteen miles SE of Big Cypress Indian Reservation in
the Everglades, intent on a weekend of hunting... On Sunday [after a couple
of uneventful days]... the dogs jumped a deer and ran it off. One of them
responded to Flynn's call and returned... but the other[s]... kept going...
at midnight, he cranked up his buggy and headed in the direction he had
last heard them.
"At about 1AM, Flynn spotted a very large and brilliant light above the
cypress trees at a distance of approximately 1.5 mi. As he watched... it
made four sweeps across the sky above the cypress, always coming back to
its original location. Flynn [headed toward it to investigate]... The light
appeared to be slowly descending to the ground. Flynn went through two stands
of cypress and when he emerged from the second one, the light was within
a few feet of the ground, only now it was not just a light - the outline
of a huge disk shaped object was plainly discernible.
"... Flynn was still about a quarter mile from the object, so he took out
binoculars and watched it. It had a shape like a flattened cone, about twice
as large at the bottom as it was high. Four tiers of windows appeared to
encircle the [object] and it had a definite metallic appearance. Around
each of the "windows" was a strip of black substance, and Flynn estimated
that each window measured about two feet by two feet. The tiers of windows
began about 12 ft from the bottom of the [object] and Flynn figured that
from the top tier to the top of the [object] measured about 8 ft. He estimated
its diameter as about 72 ft. These calculations were made by comparing the
outline of the [object] with the cypress trees in the background... The
only light was a dull yellow that emanated from the windows and an orange-red
light from the bottom of the object which illuminated the ground below.
"...[he] proceeded toward the [object]. A whirring, ringing sound which
[he] had been aware of before, but which had not been too pronounced, became
louder as he approached... [it was like] the sound of 'big transformers'.
"... [he] walked to the edge of the light which came from the bottom of
the [object]. It was then that he noticed a 'wind' coming from underneath
[it], which seemed to be rotating counterclockwise, and was very strong,
somewhat like the propwash from an airplane... about 6 ft inside the lighted
area, he raised his hand and waved toward the 'windows'... He [waited] about
a minute and waved again.
"... a short white beam of light which appeared to originate from the bottom
row of windows struck him between the eyes and he lost consciousness. When
he woke up, he was nearly blind. He could not see out of his right eye and
had only partial sight in the left eye.
"... [he] groped around the area and got to his buggy... the dog, which
had been very upset when he had first approached the object, was now exhausted...
"... [Later], Flynn realized he has been unconscious for 24 hours instead
of just two or three. He was hospitalized...
"... Dr. Harvey Stipe, his attending physician [wrote to APRO]:
"'The eye condition was hemorrhaging into the anterior chambers of the eye,
apparently traumatic... The only abnormal findings were neurological. No
paralysis was noted, but the deep tendon reflexes of biceps, triceps, patellas,
and Achilles were absent. Plantars and abdominals were absent, but cremasterics
were present... His reflexes gradually returned over a period of a five
day to one week period but returned irregularly. The forehead was examined...
and presented a thickened area just above the medial to the right eye. In
the center of this area was a depressed, slighly abraded spot about 1 cm
in diameter. Very small amount of haematoma was noted across the right eyelid...
After the fourth day in the hospital, Mr. Flynn complained of hearing reduction
and numbness in arms and hands. This cleared in about 24 hours. When last
seen on April 16, 1965, about 4 weeks after the injury, Mr. Flynn was again
checked. The abdominal reflexes were not present, but all others were normal.
The depressed area was still present and prominent. He still has a cloudy
vision of the right eye.'
"[Dr. Stipe] had accompanied Flynn [to the sighting location], and made
photos of freshly burned and scorched treetops in a perfect circle. He also
noted fresh scuff marks on two trees twelve or fifteen feet apart in the
area underneath the burned circle of trees. The marks appeared as if made
by a heavy object sliding down the trunks of the trees for about two feet.
"... we carried on some correspondence with Mr. Flynn, [who] informed us
that he had marked off the area where the incident took place, and has sent
soil samples to Colonel Robin Lewis at Homestead AFB, but that no one showed
up to interview him nor did he have any knowledge that an examination of
the site had taken place."[footnote

| Medical Effect |
"I felt a blow like a sledgehammer... when he awoke... his vision was
seriously impaired. About 24 hours had passed.... [he] required medical
treatment, and had a small dark spot on his forehead. He suffered impaired
vision in one eye, numbness, and loss of hearing." |
| Comments / Conclusion |
Numbness and loss of hearing are unusual symptoms; Vision impairment may
be due to UV or low energy far-infrared laser; UV corneal damage would be
between 0.21 j cm-2 at 308 nm and 0.6 j cm-2 at 300 nm (8+ days repair)
