Here is some information I found on the WWII explosion at the Port
Chicago Naval Magazine, near Concord (Contra Costa County), California.
This naval facility is in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A recent newspaper article discussing the way black sailors were treated
after refusing to load any more ammunition after the deadly explosion:

An interesting excerpt from the end of the above article says:
"Historians say the tragedy and its aftermath led to President Harry
Truman's order that eventually ended segregation of blacks in the
military."

If have a hard time believing that that explosion was a nuclear device.

Some time ago I ran across an interesting series of documentary articles, one
of which is at this url:  files at http://www.freeamerica.com/usa4.html. There
are many other stories on the home page at this site. While the authors devote
much time to fringe topics, they provide enough documentary evidence to lend
at least some support to this event being the a nuclear test of some sort.
