Whenever you post a copyrighted news article to the Area 51 or Ufomind mailing lists, be sure to include the URL of the place where you found it. (You can still include the text, too, but be sure the URL appears at the top.) This includes articles from the Associated Press, Reuters and any local newspaper. If you do not include a URL, I might not be able to post it to the list. However, if you cannot find a URL, feel free to send me the article anyway (at webmaster@ufomind.com), and I will decide what to do with it. Also remember that an article must have some kind of connection to Area 51 to be included in the Area 51 mailing list (consistant with the charter at http://www.ufomind.com/area51/list/info.shtml). Otherwise, it should be sent to the Ufomind Mailing List (where the only criteria is the webmaster's interest - See http://www.ufomind.com/misc/info.shtml). Submissions to the Area 51 list go to: area51@lists.best.com Archived at: www.ufomind.com/area51/list/ Submissions to the Ufomind list go to: ufomind@lists.best.com Archived at: www.ufomind.com/misc/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- COPYRIGHT PHILOSOPHY.... Copyright is bound to be a problem on the Ufomind server eventually. Since we preserve all mailing list postings indefinitely, it is only a matter of time before someone complains. A few articles shouldn't be a problem, but when the number runs into the 100s, we become vulnerable. It may be a copyright violation to store a news article on our server, but it is not a violation to link to it on another server that is authorized to carry it. Therefore, we want to link to the article on an outside server whenever possible. By providing the URL, you are giving the webmaster (me) more options for dealing with the article. Eventually, we will come up with a strategy for dealing with these articles. It may involve storing only the first one or two paragraphs of the article, then giving the URL where the user can find the rest. One problem is that the original URLs for news stories tend to go away eventually -- after weeks or months. The Ufomind server will have to provide tools to help a user find a story once the original URL is lost. Our "Q" division is working on it.
