From: campbell@ufomind.com (Glenn Campbell, Las Vegas) Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 12:02:08 -0800 Subject: New Ufomind Mailing Lists and Features |
NEW INDEX LINK FEATURE
Readers of the Area 51 Mailing List may have noticed a couple of new
lines at the bottom of recent messages. One is a bar composed of
dashes: "----------", and the second is a line that begins: "Ufomind
Index:". (In the samples below, I have deliberately inserted a ";" in
the lines to prevent them from being processed in the web version.)
;----------
Ufomind Index: http;//www.ufomind.com/ufo/topic/sightings/
When the message is stored on the web server, the line of dashes is
converted into a bar (<HR> in HTML). This will happen to any dashed
line as long as it is EXACTLY 10 characters long and there is nothing
else on the line. Its purpose is merely esthetic.
The "Ufomind Index:" line is converted into a "reciprocal link." The
URL given must specify an index page on the Ufomind server. (No other
servers are allowed.) In the web version, the URL will be replaced by
the title of that index page and a hot-link to it. At the same time,
a link back to the message is automatically added to the index page.
This provides an indexing mechanism for mailing list messages. For
example, all messages regarding Philip Corso would be added to his
page and perhaps to his book. E.g.:
;----------
Ufomind Index: http;//www.ufomind.com/ufo/people/c/corso/
Ufomind Index: http;//www.ufomind.com/catalog/c/corso/
More than one "Ufomind Index:" line is allowed. These lines should
appear as the last lines of a document (or as close to the bottom as
possible).
I will add "Ufomind Index:" line to any messages where it seems
appropriate. To save me the effort, message authors may do so also,
but the moderator reserves the right to change this information.

NEW UFOMIND MAILING LIST
Taking advantage of the new link system described above, a new
"Ufomind Mailing List" has been created to add miscellaneous documents
to our server.
Unlike the Area 51 Mailing List, which is limited to Area 51 and
peripheral topics, the new mailing list will cover ANY text document
that the webmaster deems interesting and worth preserving on the
server.
Although this mailing list is primarily a technical tool, we also make
it available to others as a public service. Some people, especially
those without reliable web access, may prefer to receive new documents
by email.
Subscription procedures are the same as for the Area 51 mailing list.
You have your choice of a single-copy and digest version.
For the archives, subscription information and statement of purpose,
see http://www.ufomind.com/misc/

NEW WEB ARCHIVE FOR UFOMIND TECHNIQUES
The "Ufomind Contributors" mailing list described in an earlier message
has been renamed to "Ufomind Techniques." It is a small, low volume list
intended for people who commonly add links to our index pages.
In now has a new web archive at http://www.ufomind.com/org/technique/

PHILOSOPHY AND GAME PLAN
Mailing lists are one of the principal ways we build "content" on our
website, so we are devoting a lot of attention to them. We now have
three "native" mailing lists on the Ufomind server, all moderated by
Glenn Campbell:
-- The Area 51 Mailing List at http://www.ufomind.com/area51/list/
-- The Ufomind Mailing List at http://www.ufomind.com/misc/
-- The Ufomind Techniques Mailing List at http://www.ufomind.com/org/technique/
In addition, we provide an archive for the UFO UpDates Mailing List
(moderated by Errol Bruce-Knapp) at http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/updates/
All of these mailing lists are expected to be permanently archived on
our server. If you link to any individual message, you can have
reasonable confidence that the address will never change.
In addition, we have been archiving the IUFO mailing list on an
experimental basis at http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/iufo/. The trouble
with this and many other lists is its low selectivity and high volume,
which we cannot preserve indefinitely. (Thus addresses of messages
are not guaranteed.) The future of our list archive for IUFO is in
limbo. What we may do is simply provide a "rotating" archive of the
most recent messages, without trying to preserve them indefinitely.
