Wednesday, October 15, 1997 Water wings: Air Force bids farewell to leader The Thunderbirds give Air Force Secretary Sheila Widnall a soaking send-off at Nellis Air Force Base. Outgoing Air Force Secretary Sheila Widnall said her farewells with a sonic boom. Widnall arrived Tuesday at Nellis Air Force Base in the back seat of Thunderbird One for a last visit before leaving office Oct. 31. After four years as the top civilian leader of the Air Force, Widnall plans to return to academic life at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she's been a faculty member for 28 years.
