The squadron is to be a reconnaissance unit, gathering information on enemy targets, officials announced. The unmanned drones are a cross between a missile and a miniairplane. A ceremony is scheduled Saturday to herald the 11th RS squadron and its commander, Lt. Col. Steven Hampton, who was with the Nellis 561st Fighter Squadron. The 561st squadron is being deactivated due to Air Force budget cuts. The 11 th RS squadron initially will consist of only a command post, which will report to Nellis' 57th Wing.
