Adventures Unlimited "Lost Cities" Series

Adventures Unlimited Press produces a number of books on ancient mysteries and lost cities around the world, with emphasis on unconventional explanations of ancient mysteries. Some are original works by David Hatcher Childress and others, and some are reprints of earliers works. Childress is the author or editor of most of these books.

Childress styles himself as a "rogue adventurer and maverick archaeologist." The tone is generally speculative, suggesting that mainstream archeology is suppressing critical facts.
AncMicro Ancient Micronesia & the Lost City of Nan Madol (new trpb)

By David Hatcher Childress 1998, Adventures Unlimited, 200pp, B+W illustrations throughout. "Including Palau, Kosrae, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei & Guam."

Childress travels to the South Pacific to report on the mysteries there. He focusses on the ancient ruins of Nan Madol on Pohnpei Island. Here, giant basalt columns have been stacked high to form artificial islands, and the main question is, how were they brought here?

"Intrepid adventurer and author David Hatcher Childress continues his world-wide search for lost cities and ancient mysteries by voyaging to Micronesia where he investigates a sunken city. Discover with David the incredible city of Nan Madol, built into the ocean over an 11-square-mile area of man-made islands and containing 250 million tons of basalt columns. Local legends insist that the giant blocks of magnetic, crystalline basalt were "magnetically levitated" into place by the islanders' mysterious ancestors. With an extensive collection of old drawings, photos and maps, this book brings alive the great empires of the ancient Pacific. Includes a 16-page color photo insert. EasterIsland The Mystery of Easter Island (new trpb)

By Katherine Routledge. 1919 (1998), Adventures Unlimited, 404pp. Reprint of an early book describing Easter Island and a journey to it by sea in 1915. About half of the book is about Easter Island and the rest is about various islands and exotic ports visited enroute. Written as a journal, it may capture for the reader some of the early flavor of discovery, before Easter Island and every other interesting place in the world became overrun with tourists. The writing is still clear and relevant in spite of its age, and the famous Easter Island monoliths have not changed since then.

"Katherine Routledge's classic archaeology book on Easter Island was first published in London in 1919. Heavily illustrated with a wealth of old photos, this book is a treasury of information on that most mysterious of islands.... In her journal, Routledge provides one of the first-ever accounty of the life, history and folklore of this strange and remote place. She and her companions explore the secret caves, ancient roads, pyramid platforms and, of course, the strange stone statues on the island." (3/4/99)

Wilkins' classic 1952 book on South America and Atlantis. With a wealth of knowledge, the author explores the mystery of the Amazon women warriers, lost cities, gigantic prehistoric animals, Atlantean ruins in the jungles and ancient cataclysms of the past. Wilkins starts with the disappearance of Col. Percy Fawcett, the British officer who vanished in the South American jungles searching for a lost city, and then relates the amazing search for the last refuge of the Incas -- a secret city hidden in the mountain jungles of Peru know as Gran Paytiti...." By David Hatcher Childress. 1988, Adventures Unlimited, 367pp. "Was there once a continent in the Pacific?
