The F-117 Stealth Fighter - called the Nighthawk by Lockheed and simply the Black Jet by pilots and crews‹was the world's first operational Stealth aircraft and the star of Operation Desert Storm. Within are more than sixty color shots that show the Have Blue technology demonstrator aircraft, the service test YF117, cockpits and every detail of the Black Jet. F-117s are shown in action at their base in Tonopah, on the journey to Saudi Arabia, and at the top-secret base in Saudi Arabia built in the early 1980s by the Saudis just for the thensecret US Air Force F-117s.
Northrop's B-2 Stealth Bomber is nearly as large in span as the B-52 it will replace, yet the B-2 reflects only as much radar as a small butterfly. Its flying-wing shape and smooth curves make it even more stealthy than the F-117 and the model for future stealth design.
During their test-flight programs in 1990-91, the Lockheed YF-22 and Northrop YF-23 proved that stealth speed, and agility could be combined in an affordable fighter. Only the YF-22 was selected for production, but both were faster, more maneuverable and far more difficult to detect than any fighter now in service. These great fighters blast off the page in more than fifty color photos that show every stealth feature, cockpits, engines, radar, and weapons.
