Joseph Heller's classic black comedy of military incompetence. It introduced the term "Catch-22" into the American language, meaning a bureaucratic snafu that leaves no logical escape. Stationed in the Mediterranean during WWII, Yossarian, a bombardier, wants out and he'll try anything to avoid the war. The military will let you go home if you are crazy, so Yossarian tries to be. The catch is, if you want to go home, then you can't be crazy, so you have to stay. That's the catch -- Catch-22. This 1960s bestseller must have inspired Dr. Strangelove and the original M*A*S*H movie. An hilarious exercise in twisted logic that ought to teach us something about humanity in general and the military in particular. -- Glenn Campbell
