"The Emergence of a Phenomenon" - The second in Jerome Clark's massive reference work on UFOs. With 85% more pages than Volume 1, this volume covers the golden years of UFOs, from their "official" arrival on the scene in 1947, though the years of the contactees and the many "flaps" of the 40s and 50s. Clark continues his impartial review of the cases, including those since considered hoaxes. This is a professional research publication, the starting point for many serious inquiries, and the price my place it out of reach of the casual UFO buff. However, anyone serious about the subject needs to make the investment, since it holds the essance of hundred of more specific books. "Clark provides a skeleton key to a whole series of previously unopened doors. His book is lucidly written and documented, and he attempts to be fair to all sides. The Emergence of a Phenomenon will stimulate serious research into this area, which continues to have an important but largely unstudied influence on American folk, popular, and religious cultures."
