We were pleasantly surprised by this comprehensive volume. We expected a book of dream symbolism -- e.g. what a dog is supposed to mean if it appears in your dreams. What we found instead was a rich encylopedia of the history, anthropology and sociology of dreams. 250 entries cover everything from the role of dreams in ancient Greek mythology to profiles of modern dream researchers. A lengthy dictionary of 750 dream symbols and their supposed interpretations is also included, but only as an appendix. As with Lewis's Angels A to Z, we would have never anticipated the broad range of information collected here. As with other Visible Ink encyclopedias, you get a lot for your money. Each alphabetical entry includes references. -- Glenn Campbell
