You don't have to believe in astrology to appreciate this massive reference volume, which is as much about the field's culture and history as its practice. The entries are surprisingly clear and concise and appear to be well documented. Entries include profiles of astrologers, historical essays, explanation of terms and techniques, summary of ancient mythologies and a fair amount of prosaic astronomy explained in layman's terms. Even if you do not believe that the stars guide men's fate, you must acknowledge the astrology is a significant part of our cultural heritage. Browsing through this rich encyclopedia, we begin to see how deep that heritage goes. Clearly, this volume is a labor of love -- not intended to make money or attract attention but an attempt by an honest practitioner to explain his field to others. This is definitely the first book we would recommend on the topic. -- Glenn Campbell
