The Nellis Air Force Range in Nevada is a training area for combat pilots. Part of the training is to engage or evade enemy radar, which could direct missiles to shoot the aircraft down. Since real missiles cannot be used, a "Smokey Sam" is fired instead. This resembles a large fireworks rocket, trailing smoke several hundred feet into the air. It does not actually strike the aircraft, but it shows the pilot where the missile would have been if the combat were real. Used Smokey Sams litter the desert near Rachel, Nevada, and we have employed local children to pick some up for us. Each is about 15 inches high and has already been fired, so there is no safety risk. The cone has been blackened and there may be some heat damage to the body. We're not quite sure what would you would do with one of these, but this is probably the only place you can buy one. -- Glenn Campbell
