Secret Aircraft
Rich
Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years at Lockheed (new trpb) By Ben Rich
and Leo Janos.
1994, Back Bay Books/Little Brown, 372pp, 8x5.5". Photo insert. Auto-biography of chairman of Lockheed Skunk Works, birthplace of secret aircraft.
This is a detailed story of the Lockheed Skunk Works from the perspective
of the man who headed it during the F-117 development.
A tell-almost-all book with many nameless references to Groom Lake.
The late Skunk Works president Ben Rich recounts the development
of stealth, his work with Kelly Johnson,
and the workings of the black world.
Given the sensitivity of his position during the Cold War,
it is surprising that this book was written at all.
Rich does not hide his disdain for the often capricious Air Force
bureaucracy and expresses his frustrations with excessive secrecy
and the inefficiencies of the military procurement process.
An essential document for historical research into
Area 51 and the aviation projects that built it.
