Approved advice for LDS youth on love, sex, marriage, and the proper role of women. The church's position on masturbation, homosexuality and premarital sex is similar to other fundamentalist sects. Dating is seen as proper only as an avenue to marriage, and all proper marriages are expected to produce children. The woman's place is in the home, rearing the children. Young adults are expected to perform 2 year "missions" for the church (see separate book list).

About Life and Love: Facts of Life for LDS Teens (used hc)

by W. Dean Belnap, M.D. and Glen C. Griffen, Publ.: Deseret Books, 1970, 287 pp. This appears to be the most commonly used guide for love, sex, dating and marriage. (We find a lot of copies at used-book sales.)

On masturbation: "The prophet of God has counseled us that sexual self-stimulation or masturbation is not good, and a person who indulges in this practice is not permitted to receive a recommendation to the temple of the Lord until such time that this practice is completely subdued and controlled." (p.141)

On homosexuality: "Homosexuality is an acquired attribute, and often is the result of the habit of masturbation.... A young man or woman need not concern himself as to being or becoming a homosexual if he will live his life according to the standards of morality of the gospel of Jesus Christ." (p.145)
