He was in the passenger's seat, dozing, when the driver hit a patch of black ice, the car swerved, and they slammed into a tree ...
"There was no pain ... I know the color was generally gray around me ...
"I had a sense that time was passing ..."
There was nothing else ... until a brilliant light opened up in front of him....
"It was just there. I didn't move toward it. It didn't move toward me. It was just like someone had switched a light on right in front of me. It was a brilliant light, more like a sheet of light than a sinigle point ..."
Suddenly, he was aware of a voice that seemed to be coming from the light.
"I didn't hear anyone speak exactly, but I knew that someone was communicating with me very clearly and directly. I tried to see a face but I couldn't."
... "Before this happened I was just--I had these millions of questions to ask and in an instant they were all literally answered ..."
And then he woke up in the wrecked car, soaked in gasoline and aware that the ignition to the engine was on. The engine had stopped but the lights were still burning. He was bleeding from his injuries and his friend, the driver, was still unconscious.
Although he knew he was badly hurt, and aware of the gasoline around him, he still had this feeling of great inner peace. He'd been told that everything was going to be fine. It would be all right.
