A look into the private world of those who claim to have been abducted by aliens. Based on interviews with sixty individuals and more than 300 different accounts, Life portrays the phenomenon as a more negative experience than some other books in abduction literature (aliens stealing embryos and the like). Though Jacobs' methodology may be questionable to some -- Most of the testimony is revealed through hypnotic regression. -- it provides the reader with a good overview of the experiences that abductees report and offers a somewhat different view of the phenomenon than that of John Mack and Whitley Strieber. This isn't the first abduction book we would buy -- Missing Time is a better introduction to the field. -- but if you've read Budd Hopkins' books and want more, this one provides additional case studies. -- Glenn Campbell

Dr. Jacobs takes the reader on a minute-by-minute iourney through a typical abduction experience and describes in detail the bizarre physical, mental, and reproductive procedures that abductees claim have been administered by small alien beings. Jacobs draws from these interviews a profoundly unsettling reason behind the abductions: aliens are conducting a complex reproductive experiment involving the conception, gestation, or incubation of human and alien hybrid beings.
Secret life is a startling challenge to our notions of reality and truth--a scientific, soundly researched exploration of hundreds of encounters with aliens.
DAVID M. JACOBS is an Associate Professor of History at Temple University and a leading authority on unidentified flying objects. He is the author of The UFO Controversy in America.
