This is the best book we've found on the above-ground atomic testing at the Nevada Test Site. Written for students of English, this book recalls the atomic era with a clarity not found in the American press. (As a bonus, sidebars translate difficult English words into Danish.) Available nowhere else in the U.S.!

"The Mushroom Cloud and the Downwinders" is an anthology designed for use in English teaching at all levels of the Danish gymnasium and HF, and in Handelskolen from Level III.

Through its many short texts and through the cartoons, photos, maps etc. the book tells the story of the above ground nuclear testing in Nevada in the 1950s and its terrible consequences.

This is the story of patriotism, of the curious bomb-watchers, of the soldiers who stood just 2,000 yards from a nuclear blast, of the downwinders, of the reassurlng bureaucrats and of the cancers.

Here you will find tests of human political and scientific interest.

The book also has an historical perspective, in that it follows the story from the anti-communist fervour of the McCarthy period through to the greater environmental consciousness of the present day, when the full price of what was done in the 50s is becoming visible.
