recalls a curious episode in military history where an ancient language helped thwart modern technology. During World War II, the Japanese were breaking American codes as quickly as they were devised. Only one form of radio communication was secure: the words of Navajo indians speaking in a coded form of their own language. Recruited into the Marines from reservations in Arizona and New Mexico, hundreds of Navajo men served on the front lines in the Pacific, relaying vital communications between units. In this book, a Japanese photographer profiles seventy-five surviving Code Talkers. Each is shown in a black-and-white photo in his modern surroundings, accompanied by a quote on his memories from the war. Text and historical photos describe the program. We find this book both haunting and thoughtful and would proudly give it as a gift. -- Glenn Campbell
