As scientific director of the Manhattan project, J. Robert Oppenheimer gave the world its most frightening weapon. When he later opposed the building of even more devastating bombs proposed by Edward Teller and others, he was branded a Communist and stripped of his security clearance. His betrayal by Teller during the McCarthy Era ranks as one of the saddest episodes in atomic history. Although cleared of the charges, he never returned to the government, but spoke strongly against nuclear proliferation as a university professor. With the end of the Cold War, Opponheimer has come to be regarded as one of the Century's noble figures -- and Teller as one of its villians. This large-format biography, illustrated with many black-and-white photos, chronicles both the secret years at Los Alamos and the post-war fall from grace. -- Glenn Campbell
