Acknowledgments

While writing a book is often a solitary, lonely enterprise, publishing one is always a communal experience. And, in my case at least, that was a blessing. Many people have been very generous with their help and advice. I was fortunate to have Simon and Schuster as a home. Dick Snyder and Charlie Hayward were on my side from the moment when I first approached them with my inchoate idea, and they continued to offer encouragement throughout the entire process. My editor, Fred Hills, held me firmly to the task. He was, as the occasion demanded, stern, critical, encouraging, wise - and, throughout it all, a friend. Burton Beals's special intelligence was a godsend; I relied on his wisdom (and kindness) greatly. Daphne Bien was also gracious with her help; she managed to smile no matter how often I wound up pestering her in the course of a single day. And, once the manuscript was completed, Jack McKeown and Lisa Kitei were no less indulgent in putting up with an anxious author; they always tried to help.

I was also able to take advantage of the advice, succor, and good-heartedness of my agents. Lynn Nesbit and Suzanne Gluck were involved with the book from the start and they helped me throughout. And along the way, I profited from the attentions of Ed Olson, Heather Schroeder, and Lew Grimes.

Other early sources of support and encouragement were David Wolper and Bernie Sofronski at Warner Brothers Television. They committed their talents to making my book into a miniseries while it was still an unfinished manuscript. Equally important, Richard DeLong Adams, the screenwriter who adapted my last book for television, became involved in the project and he, as in the past, was kind enough to offer perceptive comments about my manuscript as it evolved into a book.

Not that it was always fun. But when things got complicated, Dan Wolf always offered wise counsel and unswerving friendship; Phil Werber got me to laugh; my mother told me not to worry; my sister, Marcy, and her husband (and my friend), Peter Ashkenasy, listened to my woes and actually convinced me things weren't so bad; and Jenny filled me with hope and love.
