This book promises to provide a breakthrough on UFOs but fails to deliver more than a few new tidbits. Nonetheless, it is notable that a respected former New York Times reporter should tackle the issue. Howard Blum asserts that there exists within the government a "UFO Working Group" preparing for alien contact. He seems to have this conviction from inside sources, but one senses that they dried up before the book was completed. The first few chapters are intriguing, including an account of a NORAD radar incident in which an unusual object was tracked coming in from space. The remainder of the book feels like filler: it is a historical review of the UFO phenomenon from Blue Book to the MJ-12 controversy. Even if it failed in its goals, the book is probably worth the paperback price, at least for the subjects it does cover. It deserves a place on a serious researcher's bookshelf, if only because it is frequently mentioned in conversation. No index! -- Glenn Campbell

This is a true story. I verified every name, incident, date, and conversation that is recorded in this account. To accomplish this, I have relied on extensive interviews with civilian and military officials, both past and present; members of the intelligence community; the FBI; and scientists working both in and out of the government. I have also consulted confidential military documents, classified research reports, and reports prepared exclusively for the UFO Working Group, as well as research papers and government publications available to the public. A more detailed explanation of my method of attribution is included in A Note on Sources.
