Peter_
The Peter Principle (used pb) By Laurence Peter
and Raymond Hull.
1969, Bantam, 169pp, out-of-print in paperback.
(G)
Subtitled: "Why things always go wrong."
The classic 1969 treatise on organizational behavior.
The principle is this:
In any hierarchy, a person tends to rise to the level
of his incompetence. Thus, every position
will eventually to be occupied by someone who is not quite capable
of the job; otherwise, they would have been promoted.
The presentation is tongue-in-cheek, but the theory
is no joke. After reading The Peter Principle ,
you begin to see it everywhere. It explains, for instance,
those clerks in the post office and other
bureaucracies who have been in their positions for
decades yet never seem to advance.
Incompetence is a real, immutable quality that one has to
consider when dealing with humans.
