Between September 1973 and January 1974, a region of central England experienced a wave of phantom helicopter sightings. The "helicoptors" were rarely seen directly, only lights seen where they should not have been, accompanied by rotor-like sounds. This document is a sober, intelligent review of these sightings and the social environment in which they were made. The authors take no position on the veracity of the reports, and they acknowledge possible social influences. This is mainly a record of what was claimed. Includes a catalog of sightings and list of newspaper articles in which they were reported. An essay in the beginning discusses the mystique of the helicopter and how the public might be influenced by news reports and the political concerns of the day. -- Glenn Campbell
