It is hard to review a book that claims to be "faction" -- truth veiled in fiction. The author, Edgar Fouche, is a former defense specialist who says he has worked at Area 51. He says that security restrictions prevent him from telling us everything he knows, so he must give us clues embedded in fiction. A similar effort was the torpid 1996 novel The Catchers of Heaven which was so vague and rambling as to be meaningless. Alien Rapture is at least specific, full of many references to organizations and places around Area 51 and the Nellis Air Force Range. Unfortunately, all this extra detail doesn't really help, since fact can be replaced by fiction at any time and we never know which is which.
The story is centered on Area 51, stronghold of the infamous MJ-12 committee. Of course, MJ-12 will do anything to keep the facility secure and the alien presence under wraps -- including murder, torture and the kind of gratuitous rough stuff that fictional baddies are known for. As fiction, we found the book moderately interesting, mainly because of its local Nevada setting. (This reviewer was amused to see himself portrayed as Area 51 researcher "Wayne Newsome," who helps the protagonist break into Area 51.)
Since we rarely review fiction and haven't read any other techno-thrillers, we can't rate this book as a novel; we can only try to evaluate the factual content. To evaluate "faction," we tried to read it as though it were non-fiction and see if we learned anything new. If any part of this book truly came from inside sources, we expected to encounter not just technical details but some unexpected human insight that has not been described before. If real humans are dealing with alien technology, they must have reactions; they must have feelings; they must have peculiar human ways of dealing with the knowledge they are exposed to. Unfortunately, this book conveys nothing of the kind. The novel is a melodramatic interpretation of the MJ-12 claims, weaving Area 51, alien implants and Sitchin's "12th Planet" theories into a conventional fictional format. Although we have no doubt that the author has worked for secret government projects, the book gives us little insight into the black world that couldn't have been dreamed up by a Hollywood scriptwriter. Some of the story may be true, but it doesn't "ring true" any more than the later Schwartzenegger flick.
The book is more approachable if you first learn about it through Fouche's radio interviews or his public presentation, (See our Fouche Page for links.) Fouche claims to have a number of military sources who have given him UFO stories, but the bigger story he has weaved them into seems purely speculative. We found the interviews more interesting than the book, because they are told as fact. We wish that Fouche had cautiously expanded on the separate factual accounts and resisted the temptation to tie it together with speculation. -- Glenn Campbell
