Joe McMoneagle, author of
Mind Trek and probably the most
respected remote viewer, turns his skills to practical
concerns: predicting the future. About half of this book
consists of specific predictions for the next millennium.
We approach this book with considerable skepticism.
While there is a lot of intriguing evidence, the reliability of
remote viewing is far from proven, and believing in this book
requires a major leap of faith. However, the book turned out
to be much more interesting than we thought it would. While
the supermarket tabloids are full of outlandish predictions
that never come true, McMoneagles are very plausible.
Much of it reads like a statistical abstract. (E.g. "By 2020,
the average house [in America] with two adults and two children
will not
exceed 1250 square feet." -- a prediction we disagree with, given
the growing popularity of telecommuting from remote locations.)
Even if McMoneagle has no special psychic gift, we find this
book fascinating because it at least gets us thinking about the
future and what it will realistically bring. There aren't
many surprises in McMoneagles view of the future, and that is
one of the things that makes the book so appealing. It is,
for the most part, a straight-line projection of current
growth that requires only intelligence, not psychic skills.
The first part of the book discusses remote viewing in
general, a provides answers to two of the most popular
questions asked of psychics: the identity of Jesus and
the solution to the Kennedy assassination.
Since these theories are as unprovable as any other, we brush
them off and go straight to the predictions. Some
random samples:
- "By 2010, a pill
will be available to men that prevents pregnancy in women."
- "It is likely that civil war will break out in both Yemen and
Djibouti before the year 2000." (A prediction that can be
evaluated soon.)
- Polygamy will be permitted in all 50 states by
2040.
- Large portions of major U.S. seaboard cities will be
abandonned by 2050 due to rising sea levels.
- World population will exceed 10 billion by 2050.
- Formal contact with alien beings will take place sometime
between 2075 and 2077.
Predictions are organized by topic and give a broad overview
of life in the 21st Century. Regardless of where McMoneagle
gets his theories, they will give you the framework for developing
your own.
