Never have atomic bombs looked so beautiful!
This is an absolutely amazing video of the history of
the United States
nuclear weapons program. If you liked
Dr. Strangelove,
you'll love this: It's real! It has lots of
scenes you've
likely never seen before (unless you were there),
since much of
this footage was
recently declassified. Some great film of the only
test firing of
the nuclear cannon at the Nevada Test Site
(Who thinks these things up!?).
A lot of the activities in the Pacific are covered,
including the early
Hydrogen bomb tests that made several atolls vanish.
Some interesting
tests of what amounted to "nuclear depth charges",
complete with
scenes of anchored subs getting crushed, shot from
the inside. The
nuclear programs of Great Britain, the Soviet Union
and China also
have stunning coverage. In fact, the best scene in
the entire video
is the film of China's first test. Just after it
detonates, hordes
of screaming, sword-waving, radiation suited, mounted
soldiers ride
off into the blast, on horses also wearing
respirators. It doesn't
get any weirder than that!
Narrated in a very restrain manner by Captain Kirk
(William Shatner).
If you appeciate the black ironies of history,
you want this... You need
this. It's a keeper.

This "Director's Cut" is the same as the original
documentary but
with about 10 minutes of 3-D footage added at the
end. Glasses included.

Reservations
The original black and white footage has been cleaned
up and
"colorized," which may offend some purists.
However, we like the colorized clips because they
make the
events seem to be happening right now, instead of
30-40 years ago.
You have a greater sense of what it was like to be
there.
