Our Review Opinion of the webmaster, subject to debate

This glossy reprint from Britain's World Air Power Journal is packed with photos, statistics and details about the U-2R, the redesigned version of the venerable coldwar bird. Written by the world's foremost U-2 journalist, this large-format annual-report-style booklet focusses on the U-2's mission after the Francis Gary Powers shootdown in 1960. A fold-out provides a cut-away of the new aircraft. Includes dozens of "glamour shots" of the second generation aircraft in every conceivable deployment. We have a only a limited quantity of this one-time publication, which we understand has become quite rare. -- Glenn Campbell

From the Book Cover

Although public interest in the notrious U-2 waned soon after the Powers shootdown in 1960, the career of the aircraft was far from over. With one SAM attack the Soviets had made it obvious that the slender "Angel" could no longer operate directly over well-defended territory, a fact reinforced by another shootdown over Cuba in 1962, but its sophisticated and far-reaching sensors could still provide excellent intelligence from safer airspace. With the U-2's capabilities much in demand, Lockheed undertook a complete redesign of the type in the mid-1960s to create a much bigger, better and further-ranging version: the U-2R. That aircraft was put back into production in the 1980s, and today form the backbone of the USAF's high-altitude reconnaissance effort, having proved its worth in numerous conflicts, large and small, since its baptism of fire over Vietnam and China.
