The second episode of the cult TV series, takes Mulder and Scully to "Ellens Air Force Base," a fictionalized version of Groom Lake. Air Force pilots in a top secret aircraft program are disappearing or going crazy, and the wife of one of them calls the FBI. In a small town near the base, the agents visit a restaurant called "The Flying Saucer," where a surly woman behind the counter gives them instructions on where to look for the UFOs. The parallels with Rachel and the folklore of Area 51 are many. Naturally, the government is up to cosmic no good, aliens lurk in the wings and Scully will remain unconvinced at the end of the show. Nonetheless, this is one of the best episodes, and it hooked us on the series immediately. Also on this tape is the series pilot, a forgettable episode featuring alien abductions. -- Glenn Campbell

It is not clear if the writers ever visited Rachel, but they certainly studied the UFO literature about the town. A warning sign that appeared on the cover of MUFON Journal - "There is a Restricted Military Installation to the West..." - also appears in the show, modified only slightly.
This episode introduces "Deep Throat," a mysterious government source who warns Mulder off yet may also be his best ally. On the tarmac at Ellens Air Force base, Mulder finds what we've all suspected, but he can't take it home with him, and the truth remains out there.

A TEST PILOT WHO MAY HAVE BEEN FLYING AIRCRAFT MADE WITH ALIEN TECHNOLOGY DISAPPEARS, AND MULDER AND SCULLY MUST DEFY THEIR OWN GOVERNMENT TO FIND THE TRUTH.
Six top notch Air Force test pilots have disappeared after flying ultra secret experimental aircraft at Ellens AFB. When the wife of the latest victim files a missing persons report with the FBI, Mulder jumps at the chance to confirm his theory that the government is building aircraft with captured UFO technology. A mysterious informant, known only as "Deep Throat", appears and warns Mulder not to get involved in the case, but Mulder plunges in anyway. He and Scully witness an aerial display that defies knowledge of current technology, and find two unlikely allies in a pair of zoned-out teens who show Mulder a way onto the base...
A YOUNG FBI AGENT IS ASSIGNED WATCHDOG DUTY OVER A FELLOW AGENT, BUT FINDS HERSELF DRAWN INTO HIS INVESTIGATIONS OF PARANORMAL AND UNEXPLAINED PHENOMENA.
A young woman is found dead of no discernible cause in a forest in Oregon, the fourth member of her high school class to die this way. Agent Dana Scully is assigned to assist Agent Fox Mulder in his investigation of this and other unexplainable cases, labeled by the FBI as "X-Files." Although Mulder believes in extraterrestrial abductions, UFOs and the paranormal, Scully believes in nothing not upheld by science and scoffs at his theory that the dead girl and her friends may have been involved in an alien abduction. She is surprised, then, when the coffin of an earlier victim turns out to hold a bizarrely deformed, nonhuman body. As Mulder opens up to her, revealing that his younger sister was abducted when they were children, she begins to understand his pressing need to find the truth. A suspicious fire, the disappearance of the exhumed body and a desperate plea for help from the uncooperative coroner's daughter convinces Scully that local law enforcement is hiding some dangerous secret. Together, Mulder and Scully determine that the sheriff's comatose son is behind the mystery, a theory that leads them to an armed confrontation, a headlong chase through deep woods and a midnight epiphany.
