Help Page: Searching

For each search option, you enter one or more words in the box, select an option with the radio buttons, then press the Search button (or hit the return key). Capitalization is usually ignored.

The major options are these...

1. Search Page Titles. If you enter a word and check the "Page Titles" button (if not already selected), the system will search for the given word in the title or URL of all Ufomind index pages. For example, entering the word "abduction" in the search box will list several pages concerning claimed alien abductions. The list of index pages is followed by a listing of all books in our catalog that include that word in the book title or author name.

   You can search for a whole word or any portion of a word that is three characters or longer. The match must be exact (ignoring capitalization), so be careful of misspellings. Because the number of index pages and books is relatively small (several thousand), this option works best when you enter only a single word. If you enter more than one word, a page will be displayed only if both words appear in the title.

   This option does not find words in the body of Ufomind pages, nor does it search the titles of archived mailing list messages or other documents that are not index pages.

2. Search Page Contents. This option uses Altavista to search the entire Ufomind website for the words you have entered. Altavista indexes a large portion of our site but not all of it, so you may or may not find what you need This option works best when you search for several words, not a single word, to produce a manageable list of options.

3. Search Book Titles and Authors. This option is identical to the first one above, except that it lists books first, before listing index pages. To find books by a certain author, enter only his last name. To find a book by its title, enter the most unique word from the title. You can also search by our item code.

4. View Shopping Cart. This is not a search option but an opportunity to display your stored "shopping cart" of items selected from our catalog. A shopping cart is created when you press the "Add to Shopping Cart" button on any of our catalog entries. You will choose your own shopping cart name, which you can later use to redisplay your cart.

   If you have already added items to your shopping cart, you can redisplay the cart by typing its name in the text box (capitalization ignored), selecting "View Shopping Cart" and pressing the Search button.

Advanced Options

• Search for Links to Server. Enter a server name, like www.myserver.com, to list all links on Ufomind that point to pages on that server. To be listed, a URL must appear in the numbered link section on one of our index pages. The listing tells your the title of the link, its URL and which Ufomind page it appears on.

• Go To Directory. If you know the URL of a Ufomind page, you can go to it quickly by typing it into the search box, without the beginning part (http://www.ufomind.com). For example, to go quickly to our main UFO page, http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/, you can simply type "/ufo" in the search box and hit return. To be recognized as a directory, the text you enter must begin with "/". Since our directories are intuitively named, advanced users may find this the fastest way to jump from one part of our server to another.
