A bright red unidentified object about five times the size of a star in the sky hovered over the Reno area for about an hour, from 5:15PM to 6:15PM Pacific time. Radio station KKOH (780AM) got plenty of phone calls about the object. Reno police said they received no calls. The Reno airport said nothing on radar and they watched the object, estimating its speed at about wind speed. The airport rejected the balloon theory because even though the object was moving at upper wind speeds, it came to complete stops, becoming stationary at times. Desert Research Institute, which launches balloons, was contacted, but they had no balloons up. Helicopter users were contacted, and no helicopters were in the area skies at that time. Naval Air Station said they did not see the object and had no flights up at that time. The Reno Gazette-Journal, ran a small notice of the sighting on the second page of the second section today, 12/10/97.
