Earlier this month, we renamed the "AREA 51" mailing list to
"UFOMIND" to give us more flexibility in accepting messages not
directly related to That Secret Base. The mailing list now plays
a supporting role for the entire Ufomind/PsiSpy website, not just
the Area 51 section.
Moderation will continue to be "tight" - in that only a few
messages will be allowed through each day - and back-and-forth
debate will be limited to that which is truly productive.
However, the new rules are much looser, and the moderator now has
the discretion to accept any message he deems interesting.
Instead of a strict charter, the new list will develop its own
"personality" that will become clearer with time.
We do not intend to cover the same ground as other mailing lists
and newsgroups (especially UFO UpDates, which is already
archived on this server at http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/updates/).
Instead we intend to fill certain "niches" that are not covered
as well elsewhere. These areas include...
-- Area 51 - We will still cover all issues relating to the
secret base in the Nevada desert.
-- UFO and mystery claims relating to SPECIFIC government
installations and organizations.
-- UFO reports and claims in Nevada and surrounding areas.
-- Documents reflecting on the character and credibility
of specific UFO and paranormal researchers.
-- Documents regarding disciplined experimental parapsychology
research.
-- Reviews of new books added to the Research Center catalog -
to help "pay the rent". (If any readers disagree with our
reviews, we encourage them to respond.)
-- Technical notices regarding the Ufomind server and how
to use its advanced editing features. (Previously
provided by the Ufomind Techniques mailing list at
http://www.ufomind.com/org/technique/)
-- Samples of especially good writing in UFO or
paranormal fields, as well as miscellaneous UFO
reports that seem symbolic of a "genre."
-- UFO and paranormal claims that are so wacky or bizarre
that they deserve attention, at least for comic relief
(i.e. "loon" posts).
-- Issues of the Desert Rat newsletter as they become
available.
This mailing list will NOT cover....
-- General UFO reports, claims and theories (unless they are
specifically related to the topics above), since these are
adequately covered in other mailing lists.
-- General conspiracy claims.
-- General black aircraft discussions
-- Paranormal or spiritual claims without empirical data.
We also DO NOT ACCEPT known copyrighted material, apart from
brief quoted excerpts. Because all messages from this list are
permanently archived on our server, we don't want to run into
hassles for having copyrighted material on our site. Therefore,
we will not redistribute whole articles from newspapers,
magazines, original websites or other copyrighted sources.
Instead, if you want to call attention to an article, you can
submit a message with one or two paragraphs from it, along with
a URL leading to the rest. You can also freely SUMMARIZE or
RESTATE copyrighted material without infringement.
We DO accept re-posted messages from other mailing lists and
newsgroups, so long as they conform with our topics and
"personality". We encourage readers to puruse other mailing
lists and news sources for material that might be relevant to
this list.
This is a "low bandwidth" mailing list. On average, we expect no
more than six messages a day to be distributed. Our emphasis is
on quality, not quantity -- selecting intelligent, stimulating
messages rather than a lot of low-interest ones.
The reason for having a mailing list, instead of just a website,
is to alert people to current news and to stimulate discussion
and research in the most promising topics. Responses to previous
messages are encouraged - but only if they are "substantial" and
add something significant to the discussion. When you respond to
a previous message, you should try to include the URL of the
message you are responding to (from the archive at
http://www.ufomind.com/misc/ ).
The best way to get to know this mailing list is to subscribe to
it or review the archive. Further advice on submissions will be
posted to this list as its personality is defined.
Remember that you don't need to subscribe to this list to read it
or post to it. All messages are immediately archived on our
website, and the latest are linked to our What's New page at
http://www.ufomind.com/new/current/. The storage location for
new archived messages has been changed to
http://www.ufomind.com/misc/, but all messages from the Area 51
list remain at the old archive address:
http://www.ufomind.com/area51/list/. Every message retains a
permanent URL on our site, so you may feel free to link to any
message from your own web pages and postings.
There are currently 1187 email subscribers to this list, about
half of whom receive the digest version.
