How are therapists "registered" as a Close Encounter Therapist and what
qualifications are required?

Dear Dr. Boylan:

Either this post was never answered or I missed the reply. I'd really like
to know how therapists qualify as "Close Encounter Therapists".

Dr. Boylan could you please post the qualifications/requirements of a Close
Encounter Therapist here on IUFO for all to know as well as where one must
apply to be certified and how to be certified?

People need to understand that referrals to qualified therapists, if it is a
professional referral, is not done just off the top of a person's head or
only to those who pay "advertisement" fees. I have seen agencies, which I
will not name, refer individuals to "therapists" who only call in and
request to be put on the referral list but have no more qualifications than
any other person on the street.

I once requested information about The Spiritual Emergence Network in Menlo
Park, California and received information about how to qualify for their
referral list. I was so disappointed to learn that the main "qualification"
to be on their list was how much money you were willing to send. Their
"qualifications" may have changed by now but that is the information I
received in 1995. I was astonished to learn that clients referred to these
"Transpersonal Counselors" could end up with counseling that ranged from
having their palms read to "channeled" therapy. And to use their "referral
list" you also had to pay a fee to purchase a copy! This was supposedly a
"professional" organization devoted to the "spiritual and mental"
development of individuals. It seemed to me to be more focused on the
physical aspects of someone's pocket book!

In the past, researchers, investigators, organizations and counselors have
referred people in my area to me for counseling. Although I consider myself
somewhat qualified to counsel Experiencers due to my degrees, certifications
and experience working with Experiencers and an Experiencer myself, some
people who referred Experiencers to me didn't even ask for my qualifications
or any other information. In fact, I got referrals from people I didn't
even know so how could they know anything about me?! If it was my
"reputation", I don't think I had one and to get information about me
through the organization I chaired, they'd have to contact me first - the
president - to get it.

Sadly, there are few if any qualified counselors (to work with Experiencers)
in my area - Texas - or in most states. As president of a UFO organization
in Dallas, I sometimes received information from psychologists,
psychiatrists, doctors and others who expressed a desire to have abductees
referred to them for "help". In their letters, they listed all kinds of
professional licensure and certification but when it came to their knowledge
of UFO/abduction phenomena, they only mentioned having read one or two books
and having viewed a few TV programs about the subject! And their fees?!
They offered no cheaper rates than the next therapist so the only thing that
"qualified" them to work with Experiencers was their interest in the subject!

As you know, being a "Dr.-This" or a "Dr.-That" does not qualify someone to
work with Experiencers. In fact, I've never even met a Transpersonal
Counselor that was qualified to work with abductees or other Experiencers.
Most of the Transpersonal Counselors I've met were trained only to work with
a person's spiritual development but had never studied more than one or two
chapters on the UFO/abduction phenomenon! They may be able to help the
Experiencer accept their experiences as a part of their spiritual
development but they could not help the individual deal with their phobias,
their nightmares, their CONTINUED encounters, the RECURRING abuse or their
feelings of isolation and violation. I know, I've worked with Experiencers
who were "treated" by these "counselors" who told them it was all due to
"demons" or were advised to rub crystals all over their bodies to get rid of
the "negative energies" that were ATTRACTING aliens to them! This is like
telling a rape victim the rape was their own fault!

As you can see, I get very angry about this situation. Experiencers need to
be assured that when they are referred to someone that person will be
QUALIFIED to help them and is a SPECIALIST in that field. Unfortunately,
few therapists/counselors, doctors, etc. wish to be associated with UFO
phenomena because of the stigma attached and because there isn't a lot of
money to be made from it. I hope someday there will be enough qualified
professionals TRAINED to work with Experiencers.

I have no one in my area to refer Experiencers to - there is no one I
consider qualified. I refer people to certain individuals only because some
people need any help they can get rather than be left alone to deal with
their experiences in fear, confusion and isolation. Even the support group
I once co-facilitated now believes psychics can make aliens stay away or
crystals are a cure-all. Needless to say, I don't refer Experiencers to
them - and it is the ONLY group in town. I no longer work with Experiencers
because I am focusing on the two books I'm writing and my research. When I
did work with Experiencers, I did so for free...and sometimes even paid the
long distance bills myself!

As for certifications?.... I've seen all kinds of letters of "certification"
listed after people's names. If most of the public knew what some of these
alleged "certifications" were, they would know what was REALLY going on. I
openly admit that it only took me two days, TWO DAYS, to become a "certified
hypnotherapist" (C.Ht.). I have actually been studying hypnosis for 20
years not counting my studies and experience in biofeedback so the letters
represent other training for which there are no letters or pieces of paper
to hang on the wall. However, I do not use hypnosis in my work with
Experiencers simply because I will not feel qualified to use the technique
until I have had EXTENSIVE training and even then I will consider it a LAST
resort and ONLY if it will help the Experiencer deal with his or her
experiences - NOT for the purpose of gathering information for my next book.
I know investigators, researchers and alleged "therapists" who list all
kinds of affiliations and certifications that can easily be bought by
spending a few hours in a classroom or by simply sending in money and an
application! A majority of the general public does not know this little
insider "gimmick" some people use to impress (trick?) others.

So, let's start educating "consumers" about what it means to be a Clinical
Close Encounter Therapist and post the information everyone needs to know
about therapists that are qualified and those who may not be qualified.
This information should no longer be reserved just for professionals and
needs to be made available to all. I am sure I don't qualify but I'd like
to learn more about becoming certified as a Clinical Close Encounter Therapist.

Thank you for your time.

It appears, more and more, that the name of THE game is money and control.
Always follow the money trail. Then you'll know who is who in this "zoo".
