EDITOR'S NOTE:
For the past 8 years I have lived in a six-flat, in the apartment next to
my (nicely) eccentric landlord, Elphine Shen. Both my roommate and I are
somewhat psychic, and so we are confused that we *didn't* "pick up"
anything about Elphine's aura, the last time that we saw her. On
Wednesday, the police took her body to the coroner "for 5 days" and sealed
her apartment. One of Elphine's scared and skittish cats is still hiding
in the apartment :-(
For those who can spiritually/psychically assist, please help Elphine's
soul achieve a more peaceful passing. She will be missed.

INTERNET/E-MAIL:
>From the 1997-10 issue of Bob Girard's Arcturus Books, Inc. catalog (see
address below):
WHY YOU CAN'T FIND ARCTURUS CATALOGUES ANY LONGER ON THE INTERNET: Because
I decided to cut our losses early, that's why. Not only did we have
endless and ongoing problems with the providers we had chosn to bring us to
the world, but there were two other aspects which were much worse.
First, the world at large did not seem to care a fig for what Arcturus
Books has to offer it. So be it. We will take our two new customers and
be glad of it.
Second, almost all of the people who willingly dropped from our printed
catalogue list in order to use the internet version simply disappeared from
sight. No orders.
The lesson is absolutely clear to me: Arcturus Books was always, is now,
and should be in the future a *print medium* source of books. As a setting
in which to offer products for sale, we found the internet to be an
unqualified disaster. The level of mistrust of the internet is so
pervasive as to defeat nearly all hope of completing a transaction, and the
difficulties in focusing the already non-existent human attention span on a
computer monitor reduce the chances of capturing inquiries, orders and
sales nearly to zero. And these are without mentioning the endless
glitches and difficulties of finagling with the technical difficulties of
the net.
I had to find all of this out for myself. It took a mere 3 months to bring
it to crystal clarity, and I am glad I tried the experiment. However--we
are returning permanently to the method of offering our products with which
we are most comfortable, and with which we feel the huge majority of our
customers is also most comfortable: the direct mail, printed catalogue...
...If you wish a printed catalogue, please send $2.00 in the U.S. [see
address below] and $3.00 if outside the U.S. Applicants not entered into
our customer base unless an order is placed from a current Arcturus
catalogue. We do not send additional catalogues to those who do not order
from their first one, and we weed out customers who have stopped ordering
every so often...Our customer base is confidential, and not for sale or
rental under any circumstances.

MAILING LISTS RECOMMENDED BY OTHERS
(remember to turn off your sig file!):
The Underground Mail List has been formed to discuss man-made structures
found underground, such as steam tunnels, accessways, subways, etc. The
general theme is for people to talk about places that they usually aren't
welcome to be in, but are still interested in. The list is based on the
usenet newsgroup alt.college.tunnels and the topics discussed there. The
primary topic is college steam tunnels, but other similar structures are
also welcome. Caving and Spelunking are OFF TOPIC however as they are not
man-made structures. [A digest mode is available, but the list is
currently low traffic, and is expected to remain such because of the
specific nature of the list.]

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS:
Items available from the 1997-10 Arcturus Books, Inc. catalogue:
#4. ARCTURUS BOOKS INC. SPECIAL CATALOGUE 1997-A. 101 pages, 2730
entries. This is not a particularly good UFO catalogue, having probably
fewer than 500 UFO items. It is better in the paranormal, esoteric and
philosophical areas, and offer the contents of a large collection we
recently received...$7.50 (rebated if we fill a $150.00 net order from it).
#10. Blevins, David. ON THIS DAY IN UFO HISTORY...Phaedra Enterprises,
1997. 8½x11 spiral bound, 67pp. Not the first time this sort of thing has
been attempted, but definitely the best. One classic UFO event for each
day of the year (even Feb. 29), briefly described. I'll see if I can get
the author to autograph the copies, $20.00
#17. Coudris, Rene. THE ROSWELL MESSAGE: 50 YEARS ON--THE ALIENS SPEAK.
Gateway, ‘97, lg. softbound, 223pp. Well, why not?? After all, we've
heard only from the *human* species about Roswell. Why *shouldn't* the
aliens themselves have something to say about it?? they get their chance
here, or at least, *a* chance, for author Coudris and his wife are
telepaths who set out to contact the alien species whose genetic tampering
experiments forced them out into space in search of a new home--and led to
their crash in the New Mexico desert. Now I personally do not usually
dignify channelled or telepathic communication, and I am at all times the
scourge of all UFO contaminators and their damage to legitimate research.
But this book--despite an incredible amount of both of these
defects--probably should earn a place in your UFO library, certainly in
your Roswell section, for its European take on Roswell, aliens and UFO
paranoia in general, on the grounds that you've never seen anything like it
before--and probably never will--and that you do have to observe just how
the UFO motif in general is affecting our global village. This little item
does ufology no credit whatever, and for that reason alone, you should be
aware of it. $19.95
#46. Stevens, Wendelle C. UFO CALENDAR 1998. 9x11 format. Get it while
it's fresh--13 full-color, full-page, laser-scanned UFO photos, with the
calendar part added free!...$9.95
NOTE: U.S. customers add $4.00 (for surface mail)regardless of order size.
Florida (only) residents: please add your county sales tax to order.
