A paradigm is a set of mutually supporting assumptions about the nature of reality. Each assumption is hard to change because its neighbors require it, and no one has the time or mental capacity to argue all the assumptions simultaneously--except in a movie. There we suspend our judgment for awhile and see what it would be like if a lot of things were simultaneously different at the same time. Sometimes, the experience of vicariously living such a new paradigm is all it takes to break us through the ice into a new world of understanding. Despite its flaws, the film ["Contact"] spits out subtextual ideas relentlessly: (1) Our technology is now sufficiently advanced to conceive of making contact with ETs. (2) Radio waves from Earth have now had enough time to reach our neighboring stars , and if they responded immediately by radio, we would now be getting the signals. (3) The issue of ET life is fundamentally a spiritual issue, not merely a scientific one, and a potentially violent reaction can be expected from the religious establishments at the moment that proof of the ET presence is revealed. (4) If there is no life out there, what a waste of space that would be! (5) Time may be compressed or expanded, so that 18 hours might fit into a second. (6) There may be wormholes that immediately connect vastly separated points in space, and they may be used for space travel. (7) The universe may be holographic in nature, so that our every experience may be a projection of a more complex reality that we are only beginning to suspect. (8) Government and scientific institutions may be the last to accept the reality of the ET presence, long after the public has accepted it as obvious and a matter of common sense. (9) Mathematics is a universal language, and there is no need to expect that the visitors will speak English, a minority language on Earth. (10) Occam's Razor is a reasonable way to sort out alternative explanations--take the simplest one that works. (11) ETs might be able to project an image that looks a lot like us, by mining our memories. (12) We must now think multi-dimensionally and rise up from our 2-dimensional flatland and emerge into the glorious multi-dimensional universe that we are native to. It is time. Do you see the pattern? An idea and a half [first, "The War of the Worlds," then "The Day the Earth Stood Still"], then 3 ["Independence Day"], then 6 ["Men in Black"], and then 12 ["Contact"]--doubling each time. That's exponential growth. Expect a 24-idea film in the near future, one that brings in the spiritual nature of the question, reincarnation, the nature of reality, remote viewing, walk-ins, guardian spirits, angelic realms, genetic manipulation of the human race, the true history of our kind on this planet, and so on.
