The real danger to the U. S. and perhaps this whole planet is the government has placed such a heavy blanket of secrecy upon this issue. So much secrecy, those in government who have knowledge showing UFOs are identifiable feel the subject cannot be discussed by those in the know without serious repercussions. Others are afraid their friends and co-workers will think they are crazy if they even so much as insinuate that UFOs are identifiable as manned craft from outside the earth. This particularly applies to newspaper editors and publishers, reporters and analysts. Thus the U. S. is denying itself the chance to learn more about UFOs or to encourage research despite the fact the U.S. stands to gain form such discussions. Not publicized but true is that the Clinton administration, soon after coming to office, had many briefings on the subject. Laurence Rockefeller provided the information for the President and Mrs. Clinton. Others provided documents and verbal briefings to presidential advisors Jack Gibbons (science), Bruce Lindsay (personal), Anthony Lake (national security) and Vice President Albert Gore. About the same time a three hour briefing was given by Dr. Steven Greer to the sitting Director of the CIA, Admiral Woolsey. Subsequently, Clinton instructed Webster Hubbell, when naming him to the position of Associate Attorney General at the Justice Department, that he wanted him to investigate and report back to him on two things, circumstances surrounding the death of President John F. Kennedy, and the existence of UFOs. Hubbell, despite his position and the presidential imprimatur, was boxed in at Justice Department and never was able to find out. All of this was disclosed in Hubbell's memoir Friends in High Places. Now the lid on UFOs is gradually coming off. There is a national drive underway to get one million signatures on a petition calling for an open Congressional hearing for government employee witnesses. Dr. Steven Greer, Director of the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (CSETI), devotes most of his time seeking disclosure of government evidence proving the existence of craft manned by non-humans. Another who feels that positive proof exists within government, is Lt. Col. Philip J. Corso (retired), who reveals in a recent book, The Day After Roswell, that he was in charge of the Roswell files during his tenure as head of the Army's Foreign Technology Division. He states unequivocally that these files confirm the crash which occurred at Roswell, New Mexico was an alien space craft. This completely refutes the Air Force denials and subsequent explanations. Corso says that the crashed vehicle was studied and proved to be manufactured of materials unknown as to source and usage in this country. In time, he says, this and other UFOs provided technologies which were "worked into the commercial world via front companies." Incidentally he vouches for the fact that this has proven to be a valuable contribution to U.S. aircraft design and other commercial products. After the Roswell incident, the Air Force replied to reporters' inquiries that this was all part of research using weather balloons and other equipment. Corso and hundreds of others who work or have worked in secret defense and scientific agencies, are willing to swear under oath that alien craft are repeatedly penetrating our airspace. Whenever the military agencies are asked to look into this matter further, the answer is always the same - "We do not investigate UFOs." And where is the "community of scientists and technicians employed by government" that the first paragraph promises? Any news story that lists Greer and Corso as its main sources is.... well, a bit old anyway. The Hubbell tidbit is also old. We would still like to know how exactly Hubbell was "boxed in." What inquiries did he make regarding UFOs and what was the response? Credible journalists are supposed to provide specifics. The fact that high government officials, even Clinton, may have been briefed by UFO buffs like Greer and Rockefeller does not in itself mean anything. Some government officials are probably as curious as the rest of us. The fact that they let Steven Greer in the door does not mean they endorse his views or have any more tangible evidence than he does. This brings to mind a quote by Edgar Mitchell, which may have been posted to this list before... ===================================================================== Found at: http://www.qedcorp.com/Q/Qship.html Date unknown Excerpts from a speech by Astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who went to the Moon. "In our briefing of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Intelligence Group, it became very clear to us that they were naive. They did not really know any more about this effort than we do, if as much. That is because, as Bob Dean pointed out earlier, most of the people in government were not in government when I retired twenty five years ago, they are younger people. The files going back fifty years just no longer exist. They've either been purged, compromised or whatever. They don't exist. So when we blame government for not being forthright, they really don't have anything to be forthright about, at least at that level. Now, somewhere there's knowledgeable people, ... the question often comes up as to how they could have kept this a secret for so long. And friends they haven't. It's been around us all the time, but it has been denied, and obscured. ... the prevalence in the modern era of so many events - the sightings, the continual mutilation events, the so-called abduction events ... I find that quite alarming. ... With regard to the technology itself, I work with folks who do know what is in our technological data base and what is available to modern armies. The so-called ET technology, the ability to have silent engines and flying machines that make no sound, flying machines that have the characteristics that are consistent with reproduction of UFO sightings, are not in any nations arsenal, but they do exist. So if there are back engineered technologies existing, they are probably in the hands of this group of individuals, formerly government, formerly perhaps intelligence, formerly, under private sector control with some sort of oversight by military or by government. But this (oversight) is likely no longer the case as a result of this access denied category that is now operating. I call it a clandestine group. The technology is not in our military arsenals anywhere in the world, but it does exist, and to me that's quite disconcerting." =================================================================== FROM THE MODERATOR Mitchell is indicating the he briefed a high level intelligence group on UFOs, and they seemed to not know anything. Hubbell indicates that Clinton doesn't know anything about UFOs either. Mitchell remains convinced that "somewhere there's knowedgeable people." but doesn't offer any specific leads. As a former astronaut, Mitchell has said that NASA has no knowlege of UFOs, so who does? The argument sounds delusional: There is a massive government cover-up of UFO information -- but no one in the government knows about it. UFO believers are in the awkward position of having to explain to government officials what UFOs are all about. Maybe it is true: The UFO information is being held by a quasi governmental agency that the other parts of the government have no access to. But if the President can't get the information, and the Joint Chiefs can't get it, then for all practical purposes this agency is not part of the government. Hounding the government with FOIA requests and demands for action isn't going to get you anywhere. It is like claims about underground alien bases. Maybe there is an underground base under Dulce, New Mexico -- or under your own home town, for that matter. However, if there aren't any indications of it on the surface, there isn't much you can do to pursue this claim. As an update to the McClendon press release, a reader sends this comment.... =================================================================== Date: Wed, 01 Apr 1998 13:31:56 -0800 From: "Charles T. Oliphant III" <alkahest@slip.net> Organization: UFO Chronicles To: "Glenn Campbell, Las Vegas" <campbell@ufomind.com> Subject: Sarah McClendon News Release [Posted with permission] Did you catch Sarah McClendon's news release about UFOs? She mentions Steve Bassett and Dr. Steven Greer. I talked to Sarah today and she says that she doesn't know Greer, that Bassett had told her he (Greer) was of high credibility. She didn't know anything about Greer, not about his vectoring-in UFOs nor his claims of remote viewing aliens under attack at Blanca Peak in Colorado. She asked me what I thought of these people's credibility and I told her about Greer's antics. I remained neutral on Bassett since all I know is he's a lobbyist. She asked me to send everything I had on Greer right away. It goes into the mail tonight. Sarah has been interested in UFOs since 1947 when she was a reporter in the South-West and the Air Force told her a balloon had come down in Roswell, New Mexico. She says she didn't believe the government then, and she doesn't believe them now. She says she sat on this story for quite awhile but decided to release it in hopes that it would help Congress open up hearings on UFOs. She says right now that isn't happening. Sarah is in the hospital with a broken hip, so she won't be going to the White House soon.
