Visit to Green River finds new activity

On January 16,1998 my Wife and I drove to the Green River Missile
Launch Complex outside of Green River, Utah. We visited the area once
before last Summer just for fun and decided to follow up on some
reports that there has been some new activity at the facility.

On our last visit, we were able to roam the area as we pleased. The
entire facility was in great disrepair and looked as if it had been
that way for years. There where a few areas we didn*t look at because
of the very high fences and we didn*t want to push or luck, but for
the most part, those areas seemed to be in the same poor state as the
rest of the complex.

We were very surprised to find that several things have changed in
this area since last year. The roads have been improved and there is
obvious evidence that they*re getting heavy traffic such as deep
*rutts* in the road made by large vehicles. There are new fences
around several areas and a new sign. More alarming, where the new
signs every one-hundred yards or so that state that it is illegal to
photograph or document the layout of the facility in any way (we did
anyhow). These signs were NOT there last year.

We could not spot any activity while we were there, it was after all
it was a Saturday, but we did see two Apache Helicopters fly right
over us... that*s when we decided to leave by the way. Bottom line
is, this isn*t the same *dead* facility it was last year ago,
something is happening out there, as to what, your guess is as good as
mine.

FROM THE MODERATOR

Popular Mechanics would no doubt take this message as proof of its
assertion that Area 51 has moved to Utah.

However, at the time the article was published there was no
significant security there. (See Navigator's report on the
page below.)

This is a military facility, even if unused, so one would expect
the standard warning signs to be there. Maybe all the publicity
generated by the Pop Mech article just prompted the Army to bring
their signs and fences back to spec. Consistant with its
mission, this facility is likely to go through cycles. It
might be very active during missile tests and deserted otherwise.
New activity and maintenance might reflect a new test series.

The obvious avenues of investigation are often overlooked.
The first thing to do, if you want to find out what is going on
at Green River Launch Complex, is ask the people in the town
of Green River. The second thing I would do, if I were visiting,
would be to go to the public library and look for environmental
reports concerning the facility. There are usually reams of them
for any military installation, often deposited at local libraries.
(I learned a lot about Nellis, Los Alamos and Hawthorne this way.)
You might not find any direct record of Top Secret projects in
an environmental report, but these reports do explain a lot
about a facility and the kinds of activities that go on there.

You can't go to the gate of a facility, look at the fence, the
road and the warning signs and draw any meaningful conclusions.
That's what Popular Mechanics did at Area 51, and the above
report is doing the same.
