Astronomers Find Antigravity Force

ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A mysterious antigravity force first suggested and
then discarded by Einstein may be causing the universe to expand at a
constantly accelerating rate, researchers reported today.

The existence of the phenomenon was discovered by astronomers studying
the motion of exploding stars more than 7 billion light-years away,
according to a report in the journal Science.

"It is such a strange result we are still wondering if there is some
other sneaky little effect climbing in there," Adam Riess, an
astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley, said Thursday.
He said he and the others in the 15-member international team that
made the discovery "have looked hard for errors," but found none.

EXPERT SAYS EXTINCTION EVEN MESSIER THAN WE THOUGHT

It's not how many species die, but which ones and where, that affect
what will happen after a mass extinction, a scientist reported
Thursday. University of Chicago paleontologist David Jablonski said
he found the aftermath of extinction was even messier than had been
believed. Even in a worldwide event - such as the mass extinction
that followed what scientists now think was an asteroid hitting
Mexico - extinction patterns varied from region to region, Jablonski
found. See

SCIENTISTS FIND AREA OF BRAIN THAT TRACKS LOCATION

It is done unconsciously, but when analyzed is an amazing feat. Just
how do people remember where something is once they stop looking at
it? It turns out humans have a separate region in the brain used
specifically for remembering the position of objects, researchers
said Thursday. "Spatial working memory is used when you are driving
in your car and glance in the mirror to see the cars behind you, but
you still know where the cars are in front of you," said Dr. Susan
Courtney, who led the study at the National Institute of Mental
Health (NIMH). See

ALIENS CRAZE SPILLS OVER INTO ADVERTISING

In the sphere of advertising, aliens are making contact at a record
pace. They are dropping new-age Maytag washing machines from UFOs,
exploring the creature comforts of GM's Buick Century, selling
wireless phone service for PrimeCo and leaving secret messages on
wrappers of Betty Crocker's Fruit by the Foot. Given the blockbuster
success of Columbia's "Men in Black" last summer and TV hits "The
X-Files" on Fox and "3rd Rock from the Sun" on NBC, the current alien
sightings in advertising are hardly paranormal, said Laura Ries, a
principal in brand consulting firm Ries & Ries of Atlanta. See

NASA PLANS MARS MICROBE DEFENSE

Federal agencies are creating a high-tech laboratory to shield Earth from
any
possible live germs found in rocks that NASA wants to collect from Mars. A
Martian bacteria or virus unknown to earth could pose a risk of disease or
infection when rock samples are brought to earth in about 10 years. "The
risk
is very small, but not zero, said NASA officer John D. Rummel. NASA's
laboratory would quarantine rocks with methods similar to those used by
researchers to contain the deadly Ebola virus.

WORLD GOT WEIRDER IN 1997, SAYS FORTEAN TIMES

The world got weirder in 1997, driven by interest in so-called "holy"
vegetables, events surrounding the death of Princess Diana and
millennium cults, according to a survey released Thursday. The
Fortean Times - the British journal of strange and uncanny phenomena
- said its index of media interest in the weird and wonderful rose 4%
last year, the biggest increase ever. The journal said 1997 proved a
bumper year for stories about human weirdness. They ranged from the
mass suicide of the Heaven's Gate in the U.S., to the cloned sheep
Dolly and a panic over penis-stealing magicians in west Africa. See

ELECTRONS KNOW YOU ARE WATCHING

Experiments Confirm a Quantum Oddity
To Change Universe, Just Look

By Lidia Wasowicz

United Press International Feb. 25

Apparently, there is more to the saying "" than meets the eye. What you see
might actually determine what you get. And what you may ultimately get as a
result of this finding is a new generation of supercomputers and electronic
equipment. Researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel say
they have demonstrated one of the strangest premises of quantum theory, which
states that by the very act of watching, the observer affects the observed
reality.

Electrons Know You Are Watching

Reporting Wednesday in the British journal Nature, the scientists describe
their experiment that shows how observation affects a beam of electrons. Lead
researcher Mordehai Heiblum says the study shows the greater the amount of
watching, the greater the watcher's influence on what what is being watched.
The principles of quantum mechanics state that particles, including electrons,
can behave as waves. In their wave mode, electrons can simultaneously pass
through several openings in a barrier and meet again on the other side. But
this meeting, called interference, can take place only if no one is watching.
Put an observer in the picture, and the scene takes on a whole new look. Says
Heiblum, "If a particle can be seen going through one opening, it's clear it
didn't go through another. Thus, when under observation, electrons are forced
to behave like particles and not like waves. The mere act of observation
affects the experimental findings."

In their experiment, the team built a tiny device with a barrier with two
openings. They sent a current of electrons toward the barrier. The observer in
this case was an electronic detector that can spot passing electrons. The
scientists found the very presence of this watcher near one of the openings
caused changes in the interference pattern of the electron waves. Not only
that, the extent of the watching influenced the outcome as well.

A Possible Information Seal

The experiment may have a practical value in developing technology to ensure
the secrecy of information transfer, according to the study authors. The
presence of an eavesdropper, who is an observer, although an unwanted one,
would kill the interference, says Heiblum. This would let the recipient know
the message has been intercepted. The work also could have implications for
future quantum electronic machines, which may become a reality in the next
century, paving the way for a new generation of computers and other electronic
equipment.
