Horror of the TV Babies
by Charles Hornberger

[April 3, 1998]

To all the children of America, I'd just like to say that I'm sorry.

I know it's too late now and apologies won't change anything. But I'm
sorry anyway. I'm sorry I didn't do anything to stop this madness. I'm
sorry that I didn't see it coming, that I didn't write letters to my
congressman demanding justice and reason, that I didn't riot in the
streets and set fire to the cities to protest what is being done to
you.

But I didn't, and now you're doomed.

[Snip]

This is a show about four bouncing, round, felt-covered "babies" --
played by actors in brightly colored costumes -- who live inside a
grass mound and obtain a deep and unbridled joy from watching their
own TV stomachs play the same film clips over and over again.

In the psychedelic world of Teletubbyland, God is a magical windmill
on a hill. This idiot whirligig broadcasts TV signals into the
antennas on top of their monstrous heads. When the windmill starts
turning, one of the lucky Teletubbies is "chosen" -- he gets the
message and his TV turns on. The others gather around and watch. One
show is about a girl riding a pony. When the show is over, they scream
"Again! Again!" The clip plays again.

Sometimes, the Teletubbies talk to a vacuum cleaner named Noo-noo.
Noo-noo keeps their house clean. There are no people. Adult voices
come out of periscopes in the ground. They say things like "Trot,
trot, trot." When this happens, the Teletubbies trot around on the
grass. The Teletubbies have a couple of games they like to play. They
run into each other and fall down. They play peek-a-boo. They hop
around. They dance.
