• 12/12, 3pm: Our director has finally gotten around to replying to the lawyer for the "Skeptical Inquirer," who has accused us of copyright and privacy violations. The full sequence of correspondence can now be found in place of the article itself. We accept the lawyer's offer to provide legal citations.
  As an amateur legal researcher, I have been unable to find any citations supporting a "right to privacy" for a corporate officer writing on behalf of his organization, when no litigation is pending and there is no claim that the letters have artistic merit in and of themselves. Certainly, if such a right existed, it would greatly hamper journalism in this country, since it would mean that a reporter could not quote the correspondence of a company spokesman without their permission.

One of the satisfactions of renting is that you are not providing further financial support to either of the parties, who have already made out quite well on what are essentially homemade videos. We cannot condone copying, but what you do with these tapes in the privacy of your own home is up to you.

  Each person is motivated by a pressure to exist. The pressure to exist explains most of this behavior, because existing, in the human world, is much more complex and self-contradictory than merely eating and procreating.
