An editing screen for print references has just been created. Print references were first described in: http://www.ufomind.com/org/technique/1997/jun/t10-003.shtml These entries make reference to books that we offer in our catalog. For example, for the MJ-12 documents, you can reference the pages in "Above Top Secret" and Clark's UFO Encyclopedias where the MJ-12 documents are discussed. This feature is intended for advanced users. I don't expect many casual users to touch it. The editing screen is accessed on any page by selecting "Edit Print References" from the "Your Options:" list at the bottom of the page. The screen you are then shown is a free-form text box, which contains the current print reference entries, if any. Any changes to these options are made immediately, with a copy of the new and old text sent to me for later approval. (If you accidentally overwrite some references you wanted to keep, I can probably recover them.) Entries are entered in this form... ats: MJ-12 documents discussed in Chapter 99 (8 pages). crash: MJ-12 documents discussed in 28-page chapter. 5 pages of footnotes. The word before the ":" is the product code of any item in our mail order catalog (which I am trying to stock with all standard UFO reference works). In the displayed version, this code will be automatically replaced by the full product title and a hot-link to the catalog entry. The text that follows on the same line will be displayed following the title. It is displayed exactly as you give it. Html tags may work, but I will probably restrict them <u>underlining</u> words for emphasis or citation. (No bold, italics or other font changes.) Normally, there is exactly one entry per line, but long lines can be split by added a backslash to the end of the broken line. For example, see this entry for Ed Walters.... randlerep: Chapter 4 (24 pages) is an analysis of Ed Walters' Gulf\ Breeze photos.\ Randle: "Ed Walters, playing a somewhat admitted practive joke, found\ himself the center of attention, and he loved it.\ The fact that there was nothing to the sightings meant nothing to him.\ He grabbed the spotlight as quickly as he could, and has done everything\ possible to stay in it. But his story, from the beginning,\ was a hoax." [gc] (Note that "Randle:" in the third line is not treated as a product code because the "\" precedes it on the previous line. You should include your initials to the end of any entry you add. (If any entry does not have initials, you can assume that I added it.) The text that appears here can be in whatever form you think is most useful. It can be only a single page number or it can be a lengthy explanation or quote from the book. (The randlerep entry above is about the maximum size a single entry should be.) Think about what information would be useful to _you_ if you were looking at the entry. The user wants to know whether it is worth his time to look up the actual reference. Thus, it is fair to give evaluations of the print reference, like "24 pages on the incident, but mostly a repeat of the information in Smith's book." Evaluations should be relative: Don't call a reference "good" or "bad"; instead call it "better than X" or "not as complete as Y" or "probably the most complete reference currently available on the incident." You can add a print reference to any index page where you find "Edit Print References" at the bottom. You can safely select "Edit Print References" to view the existing options without causing any damage. Your changes are saved only when you press the "Save" button at the bottom of the editing screen. Some example pages... http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/people/w/walters/ http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/topic/mj12/ http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/place/us/nm/roswell/ http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/people/f/fulton/ http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/place/us/pa/kecksburg/ SPECIAL FEATURES The editing screen gives you the option of saving the references to a different file, instead of the one you first selected. This can save time when entering references for a series of pages. However, there is also some danger: If you choose to override the file name, the editing screen provides no protection against accidentally overwriting the references that might already exist at the new destination. For this reason, it is usually best to read in the existing references -- either by going to the new page and selecting "Edit Print References" or by changing the URL of the editing screen and reloading it. You should override the file name only if you know for sure that there are not yet any print references at that destination. KNOWN BUGS Print references are not displayed unless you have at least one link entry on the page. (They are there, but they are just not shown until you add at least one link.) POSSIBLE ENHANCEMENTS There will eventually be an automatically generated cross-reference list in each catalog entry for all of the print entries that refer to it. +------------------------------------------------------------------+ | U F O M I N D - M O T H E R S H I P | | "World's Largest and Best Organized UFO Website" * | | *** | | GLENN CAMPBELL - Moderator & Webmaster ***** | | ******* | | Area 51 Research Center campbell@ufomind.com ********* | | Las Vegas Annex http://www.ufomind.com | +------------------------------------------------------------------+
