Red Cross Sees =91Superdisasters=92 Ahead...06/25/99=20

(MSNBC) GENEVA, June 24 =97 Last year=92s natural disasters were the =
most damaging on record but it=92s likely we haven=92t seen the worst, =
the International Federation of the Red Cross reported Thursday. Climate =
change, deforestation, poverty and overcrowded cities will likely mean =
more frequent and more severe =93superdisasters,=94 the charity said in =
its annual report on disasters around the world.=20

=93EVERYONE IS aware of the environmental problems of global warming =
and deforestation on the one hand and the social problems of increasing =
poverty ... on the other,=94 said Astrid Heiberg, president of the =
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. =93But =
when these two factors collide, you have a new scale of catastrophe=94 =
=97 one the report described as the age of =93superdisasters.=94=20
 =20
Peter Walker, head of disaster policy for the federation, predicted =
=93more extreme events, and this is the stuff of disasters ... If we =
look at 1998 it gives us some sense of what we are going to get in the =
future.=94=20
 =20
=93Countries that have not had a major disaster in living memory will =
start having them,=94 he added. =93Those that have had one or two a year =
will have more.=94=20
 =20
CHAIN REACTION=20
 =20
The =93World Disasters Report=94 said more natural disasters occurred in =
1998 than in any other year on record, leaving an overall bill of more =
than $90 billion. Climate change, it added, has made the consequences of =
the disasters more complex, creating chain reactions.=20
 =20
Scientists agree that Earth=92s climate has natural cycles of change, as =
does El Ni=F1o and its La Ni=F1a counterpart, and many but not all =
believe humans are having a significant impact via =93greenhouse=94 =
gases like carbon dioxide that trap heat inside Earth.=20
 =20
One chain reaction cited by the report is El Ni=F1o=92s impact on =
Indonesia, where it caused the worst drought in 50 years.=20
=93The rice crop failed, the price of imported rice quadrupled, the =
currency dropped by 80 per cent, food riots erupted in the capital =
Jakarta and in the countryside, massive forest fires burned out of =
control, paralyzing parts of the country with a toxic layer of smoke=94 =
the report said.=20
