Abduction: Human Encounters with Aliens by John Mack - Dr. John Mack is often cited as lending credibility to the abduction phenomenon. As a Harvard psychology professor, he brings prestigious credentials to the field, and this book is his best known work. Unfortunately, Mack seems to have little interest in physical evidence or in whether or not the claimed abductions actually occurred. This book consists mainly of thirteen case studies of abductees (or "experiencers" in the modern lingo), each of whom tells a dramatic tale. Without any significant investigation, however, the stories are just stories. The best "confirmation" Mack can come up with is that the witnesses show no sign of clinical pathology and their emotional responses are appropriate for their claimed experiences. ... Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind: A Reporter's Notebook on Alien Abduction, UFOs, and the Conference at M.I.T. by C.D.B. Bryan - Describes the rather remarkable abduction conference held at M.I.T. in 1992. Bryan entered the conference fairly skeptical, and over its course became convinced something extraordinary was going on. Bryan gives a good account of the conference itself, but also adds a lot of behind-the-scenes information, including the "politics" of the various factions of the abduction community. In addition to his coverage of the conference, the book includes a number of supplemental interviews of participants (both researchers and abductees) done after the conference. This is perhaps one of the most important books on the topic of abductions, as it covers the full range of the experience. (More) -- #fourth $13.95.
