Language: The Hungarian language is inpenetrable to outsiders because it bears no relation to most of the major world languages. English speakers are much more rare in Hungary than in the rest of Europe because Russian, not English, was the required second language during Communism. German with the preferred third language, because most tourists were German.
Economy: Although still struggling economically, Hungary is relatively stable and prosperous compared to other post-Communist states. Hungary was better prepared for capitalism than the rest of the Eastern Bloc due to its relatively liberal economy and open society during Communism. The transformation since 1990 has been remarkable: No where else have I seen so many McDonalds and other fast food restaurants as in the downtown areas of Budapest!
Political Tensions: Unlike the other former communist states, there are no major ethnic tensions within Hungary and no threat of civil war. There remains some tension in Hungarian communities outside the country, however. Much of the periferal land area of Hungary was divided up among its neighbors following the First World War, and this is still a source of anger among Hungarians. Romania has a large Hungarian population which the harsh regime tried to suppress during Communism. Ethnic tensions there remain high.
