Fun in Rachel

My friend and drove out to Rachel March 22/97. I highly recommend this to anyone who is in Vegas for a few days. The complete isolation is a welcome change from the energy and drama which prevails on the Strip. You probably won't see any funny things in the sky (I didn't), but there is a real dusty cat at the Research Centre in need of petting.

Hi, i'm Owen Calvert, and I'm 12½, I'm thinking of moving to Rachel, Nevada when I'm older, and it's not just a phase, if it is, it's been going for 7 years. My question is, is it easy, to move from the UK, to the US, especially to Rac- -hel? Thanx alot for your time! Owen 'Ufologist of Wingham' Calvert

Just wanted to tell you that you have a great, informative page. I love the history of Rachel. Your writing really enticed me to visit this desert town. I would even consider packing up and moving there. How much does property goe for in Rachel? How about a Mobile home? If you can't answer, I'll check out another Rachel source. Thanks & keep up the good work! Jim

You can get 5 acres in Rachel for about $5000-$6000, but that's just the start. You need to spend $3000-$5000 more on a well then about $1000 for power. Then the question is: What are you going to do once you're here?

I just want to compliment you and all that contributed to the making of the Web page describing the history and presence of Rachel, Nevada. It is excellent! I am an avid motorcycle rider, and love touring the Southwest on it! I have never really been into Nevada however, and had been casually planning a trip across it on the 50. After reading your web page I feel compelled to include the 375 and Rachel on my ride. Having been raised in the Mojave Desert East of Barstow here in California, I have a keen appreciation for what some call the "stark beauty" for the desert. There is just something about it that draws me back time and again. Anyway, I am wondering if you would be able to supply any tips about the time of year that would be most appropriate for such a motorcycle trip.

The high elevation makes summer the best time to come. Winters are brutal and summer temps never break 100 (cool by Mojave standards). --GC

Cover Image The Strange Disappearance of Uncle Dudley : A Child's Story of Los Alamos is an odd children's book that jumped out at us from the atomic history section of the Otowi Bookstore in Los Alamos. We said, "Really wierd. We have to carry it." We can't think of any child who would want to read this book, which to us is part of its charm. In a few dozen manipulated photographs and a handful of words (36 pages in very large print - seriously overpriced), it is supposed to explain to young children of our post-Disney generation what it was like to live in a "secret city" during WWII. Like today's Area 51, Los Alamos did not officially exist during the war, but wives and children also lived there. Imagine the problems of housing children at Groom Lake: You could keep the workers quiet, but what about a 14-year-old? How does a family explain its "disappearance" to friends and relatives? This book tells the story of "Uncle Dudley", an atomic worker. During the war, he disappeared and went to live in "PO Box 1553, Santa Fe, NM" - the same address where his son was born a little later. That some adult is now trying to explain this oddity to disinterested children suggests that the "secret city" still haunts the author. [gc 12/96] - #dudley {1book} $6.98
