Unknown Object Sighted

By BILL PAPICH

Rig workers who read newspaper accounts of a strange light over San Juan County Tuesday night say they saw something in the sky Monday night that may be even stranger.

I've never seen anything like it before," said Pete Corey of Farmington.

Corey said he and four other men were at a drilling rig four miles northwest of Aztec at 8 p.m. Monday when they all saw what appeared to be a mysterious object with lights pass overhead.

What we saw was big. That thing was low enough where you could almost see the whole body of the thing," Corey said.

To me it was square looking with four lights. There seemed to be a light on each corner of this thing. There was no sound. We couldn't hear a thing."

Corey said the object drifted across the sky for 15 to 20 seconds before it was out of sight.

Gabe Montano of Bloomfield was among the five men and said the lights didn't blink like airplane lights. He said the object looked rectangular.

It was kind of gliding across the sky. It wasn't going very fast," Montano said. It wasn't very high at all. It was right there."

He said the drilling rig was 110 feet high and the object appeared to be only about 400 feet above the top of the rig.

Corey said he first suspected the object might be a weather balloon, but it was moving across the sky too fast for a balloon. He said the object was moving too slow to be an airplane.
